If your brows start drooping toward your eyes, and your forehead is wrinkled and saggy, you may be a good candidate for a brow lift procedure. Here’s what you need to know about the procedure and its many benefits.
As you age, the constant tug of gravity on your body can pull down the tissues of your eyelids, eyebrows, and forehead, making them sag and giving you a scowling appearance that probably doesn’t accurately describe who you are or what you’re feeling. Fortunately, a brow lift reverses gravity’s effects, helping you look younger and increasing your self-confidence.
At 817 Surgical Arts, triple-board-certified facial and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Emily Johnson offers brow lifts for our Fort Worth, Texas, patients who want to tighten and brighten the upper third of their faces. Here, she talks about the surgical procedure and the benefits of getting a brow lift.
The 3 types of brow lifts
There are three basic types of brow lifts.
1. Coronal (classic) brow lift
Once the industry standard, the coronal lift fell out of favor as less-invasive procedures developed. The doctor may choose to use it in some cases, though, to help meet a patient’s desired results. The technique uses a single, long incision just behind the hairline extending from one ear to the other. Dr. Johnson removes excess skin, fat, and connective tissue, then repositions the brow muscles and remaining skin to produce a more youthful appearance.
2. Temporal or limited-incision brow lift
If you’re getting a blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) in addition to the brow lift (described below), this procedure is the most commonly used. Dr. Johnson makes one-inch incisions behind the hairline and just above each temple. Then, she repositions the outer brow tissue through these small incisions. Finally, working through additional incisions she makes for the upper eyelid blepharoplasty, Dr. Johnson lifts the area between the brows to smooth out any frown lines.
3. Endoscopic brow lift
Dr. Johnson uses this procedure most frequently, and it’s the go-to choice for brow lift surgery in general because it’s less invasive than the other two techniques yet still gives good results. Dr. Johnson makes several tiny incisions (each less than an inch long) just behind the hairline to hide visible scars as much as possible. Then, she threads a miniature camera (endoscope) and very thin instruments just under the skin. These allow her to reposition the muscles and lift the underlying forehead tissue while removing excess fat and tissue. No matter which type of brow lift you receive, the doctor closes the incisions with a few sutures or staples, which she’ll remove about a week later.
The brow lift+
Dr. Johnson often performs brow lifts as stand-alone procedures, but they do well paired with other treatments, like a blepharoplasty (upper and/or lower eyelid lift); that way, you refresh the entire upper third of your face, and you cut down on your downtime from multiple procedures. If you have any other areas you’d like to add to the brow lift, discuss your options with Dr. Johnson at your consultation.
