Facelift Q & A

What is a facelift?

A facelift is the most comprehensive approach to addressing the aging face. It addresses sagging skin and folds in your jawline and cheeks, and the effects  are long-lasting. It is also common to combine face and neck procedures to achieve optimal results. Dr. Johnson has many years of experience completing facelifts.

What are the benefits of a facelift?

The benefits of facelifts include:

  • Younger-looking appearance
  • Tighter, lifted lower face
  • Reduced facial folds
  • Improved contours
  • Less excess skin

Facelifts can take years off of your look. Dr. Johnson customizes each treatment to match your beauty goals.

To determine which cosmetic procedure you’re a candidate for, she reviews your medical history, asks about your lifestyle habits and desired results, examines your skin, and lets you know what to expect during your surgery.

How should I prepare for the procedure?

To get ready for a facelift, Dr. Johnson gives you instructions to follow. You should stop taking certain medicines or supplements if necessary and adhere to the preoperative instructions provided. You should also avoid eating and drinking  on the morning of surgery and arrange for someone to drive you home afterward. Optimal patients are non-smokers.

(Although a traditional facelift may not be the right procedure for you if you smoke, Dr. Johnson offers several non-invasive alternatives to help achieve similar results. Schedule a consult for more details!)

What happens during a facelift?

Before a facelift, you receive local anesthesia with a sedative or general anesthesia to make you fall asleep. Dr. Johnson makes incisions, tightens the deep tissues beneath your skin, and may sculpt tissues within your face and neck. She tightens and positions facial skin to perfect facial contours before closing the incisions. The procedure may last 2-4 hours.

What should I expect after my facelift?

After the procedure, it’s important to get plenty of rest and take medicines as directed by Dr. Johnson. You can expect some bruising, swelling, numbness, and tenderness.

Dr. Johnson may have you wear bandages or a facial sling during the healing process, and drainage might appear from the incision sites. You may also have a drain in place after your surgery. You can apply cool packs to the treatment area to reduce swelling and tenderness.

Keep your surgical wounds clean and avoid makeup, excessive pressure on your face, soaps, shampoos, and intense exercise until Dr. Johnson says it’s okay. Because the aging process never stops, facelift results aren’t permanent, but they can help you turn back the clock to achieve beautiful lasting results.
